“We’re starting an art movement. Doctors, lawyers, accountants – everyone comes here to sketch.”

“Why the medium of sketching?”
“It’s the most accessible and easy way to get people to express their ideas, their emotions, feelings. I’d say our greatest struggle is that a lot of people undermine sketching and think it’s rough, but I think it’s where all the best ideas start from.”

“At first I came to Malaysia because my father worked here, but now my family has moved back to Nigeria. I’m just here to complete my studies in Media Informatics…”

“Is that a bit like graphic design?”
“Mmmm no. Ok, you know stage production in concerts? It’s a little bit like that.”
“Did you always want to study that?”
“I actually wanted to study music but my parents didn’t let me. They wanted me to be financially secure.”
“So who’s your role model?”
“My mother. She went through a lot to take good care of my sister and I. Some day I hope to be as strong as her.” – Humans of Kuala Lumpur

“I just want him to be healthy, to be happy. It’s what every mother wants…”

“I want him to take up sports, swimming specifically to get the six pack ahahaha. He has to be smart.”
“How does your life change when you become a mom?”

“Freedom. My friends call me up for a cup of coffee and I can’t go out because there’s no one to take care of him. I’ve also had this dream of…travelling. With a son, it’s difficult because you can’t go out during the night. He struggles to stay awake and walk with us.”

“What’s your favourite Christmas memory?”

“In the club. I work as a DJ, and actually for a female, it’s a really difficult to get into this industry. Some girls don’t really have the skill, they just sell their front. But that’s also because some of them haven’t actually learned how to DJ – people don’t think of it as a profession, so they also don’t think it’s worth paying for.”
“The way that it works is that DJs will be put under an events company, but the boss is normally male. So you know what that’s like…they’ll send their sexy DJs first but they’ll send me if they need someone whose skill they can trust. I mean, I got bored taking songs from other artists, so I started to get into instrumental and production courses, and now I make my own productions.”
“So how did you get into DJing?”
“Actually I was a dancer and one day we had an international competition with judges – and my bone came out. After that I couldn’t walk for a year you know, I was walking like this. I thought if it came to the point where I could never dance again, I might as well find something else. I would play music for the dancers and I realised I really loved it. Then when I saw people dancing to my own music…It made me happy.” – Humans of Kuala Lumpur

“I love working at the Apple store. Everyone is friendly, dedicated, and we all work together…”

“And unfortunately no, I do not own an iPhone. I have a Nokia Lumia instead with Windows. And I love it. I think that youths nowadays, whose first phones given to them by parents are iPhones, gets spoiled, because they will never know and appreciate how beautiful the iOS design is. I mean what was your first phone? I used to have a Sony Xperia phone with Android before switching to the Nokia Lumia …and only from there can I appreciate how good the software design of iPhones or the new Android is. If you ask me, I think young kids nowadays, or anyone, their first phone shouldn’t be as high end as the iPhone – a mid-range phone will do. I am now saving up for the next iPhone, but I highly recommend the Lumia too!”

“We’re from Japan and this is our first time traveling abroad…”

“We’re here for vacation…but no one is supposed to know that actually. You see both of us work at GAP in Japan, but the thing is I’m the Manager there and she’s a part-timer. Hence why this vacation…well, not many people can know about it. Because in Japan, professionally, even in company policy, it is not accepted for the manager and the employee to go out on a holiday like this. But we’re in love and this is the only way we can spend time together, and we’re going to enjoy this holiday! Oh, and please don’t tag us on Facebook!”

*They were heading to Redang Island the next day, and had no clue what to do in KL during their short stay here. I told them to check out KL Tower as their bus was leaving that very evening.

“Well I used to cook every single day when I break my fast this Ramadan, or buy food at the bazaar…”

“But since there’s only a few more days left of fasting…I’ve just decided to go and eat out! There’s no hassle in going through the jam to reach home early, cooking the food, doing the dishes and all that. I’m just going to pamper myself now.”

“We want the truth to prevail…”

“We hope that there’s no hiding from any embassy, like Russia’s, and we want all parties involved to come out with the real stories. No lying, heightened story behind, just the truth. We all want the truth. Because the passengers of flight #MH17 deserve justice.”

“I am part of this project to help raise awareness of cancer by reaching out to the community…”

“The project is about colorectal cancer by providing awareness, and then screenings and treatments and this project is funded by Empowered. I am doing this part-time as I wait to go and fly to the UK to complete the remainder of my degree in Medicine. Why am I doing this? Well at the end of the day, it feels good to know that they appreciate what you are doing for them. I’ve formed an attachment with them, especially those I’ve been with since the beginning. They are like my parents now, and it amazes me on how they can cope with all the news calmly. When they go for surgery, it feels like my parents are going for one. And I really pray that all will go well for them.”

“I am 73 years old, and though not fit, I wish I did more exercise when I was young…”

“Health is the most important thing in your life. Without health, you have nothing. When I was 5 years old, my father left my mother and me. Because of that, my mom left as well, leaving me to live with my relatives. I was raised an orphan but look at me now! I am married and have several grandsons and granddaughters – things turned out well in the end. Because of my health I have lived long enough to see these wonderful things in life. No medicine is a good as exercise – exercise is the best medicine!”
