“I’ve been working here for 10 years. I always wake up at 4am in the morning, and finish work at 3pm…”

People close their shops already but I still have many more to sell. I don’t keep count how many hours I sleep, I’m just very tired when I get back home. I don’t remember what time I sleep. That’s my life!”

“It’s a family business. I am 49 years old and I love my job…”

“I took this job from my dad, and I started helping him since I was 7 years old. This wet market has changed a lot. Many things have changed. The area has changed. But we still sell. My son he’s doing something else. He doesn’t want to be a butcher like his dad.

“When do usually you experience the most crowds, and how many pieces of meat would you cut everyday?

“During Hari Raya Aidilfitri. It depends on everyday demand. In a day we cut one meat and if we have orders to supply for catering and hotels it will be more than one. A lot of people like lamb.”

“I’ve traveled solo to Cambodia, Laos and now Malaysia.

What’s your advice to people out there who wants to travel alone?

“I think its not dangerous to travel alone for a single lady, you just need to be careful of the robber. If you don’t do harm to people, it will be ok. If you help people, and be friendly, they will help you back.”

“The best tea does not grow in one tea plantation…”

“That is not how it works. Your quality of tea depends on external elements like the weather, so to find the best tea, you have to move around to where the weather is good. You cannot say your tea plantation grows the best tea leaves, because your plantation stays in one place – it does not move with the weather. You have to think that the tea is like you. It cannot grow to its best potential in one place, just as you cannot grow to your best by staying in one place. Like you, the best tea will be found where it can take the most advantage of the sun.”

(Part 2/2) “I want to bring awareness on stroke. Beside the physical problem, there’s also the psychological problem that people don’t see…”

(Part 2/2) “Lets say you are taking care of a stroke patient – up to a time you will feel start to feel stress, have temper, start to get angry and shout and without realizing what you are doing is giving stroke patients feel kecik hati (upset). Because with stroke medically we have the National Association of Stroke – that one they have covered. But on the psychological part no one has ever told a story on it. Stroke patients go through psychological problems, as well as the caretaker, that they have to be aware of. And taking care of stroke patients is not cheap.

“You should know about your stress level. If someone is stressed, you cannot reach the level of stress that makes your brain go haywire. It could be things, it could be people. Also heart disease and high blood pressure, you have to control it. Psychologically, you have lesser patience, you just feel like getting angry all the time, and the way you look at things is very thinly. You should just let things go, especially if you have stroke. And it goes to the caretaker as well, they have to be calm and come to their common sense as well.

“I hope that I can be independent when it comes to certain things, that involves my daily life. I just want to be independent. Like now I need someone to send me to the toilet. That’s one of my wish, to do it on my own”.

“I have a talent with numbers, back when I was working at a bank, all my colleagues tell me that, but I felt limited because I was not reading enough, and didn’t like the working culture there…”

“I am motivated to read books especially psychological and self-help topics even though I have dyslexia and I have to read very slowly. I feel dizzy if I read too fast but I think it’s better that I try and read a book, compared to others who can read but do not want to read books. People should read more books. People think they will become mature as they get older but that’s not true – they will only become old. We think that we’re going to be mature but humans will only be mature if we are diligent in studying, and reading books is is one of the ways to be mature. Just cause you’re old doesn’t mean you’re mature. I once read in this book that says all of us people live to eat, drink and have fun – if you are not reading a book, that’s fine and you can live. But in truth you cannot live if you are not reading a book, because you’re spiritually dead. What makes us different from animals, for example, is that we can learn, think – and read”.
