“I made a promise with my friend that I’m not going to spend my money on merchandise anymore.
As a KPOP fangirl, I mostly keep this a secret. It’s because I’m mostly spending money on merchandises and whatnot. But I think most people do admit they’re a KPOP fan in online forums and social media pages.
I’m a fan of this group called SEVENTEEN. So, my friends and I here we would come together and spend our money to print items that have faces of our idols. We’re doing this on our own because we wanted to bring fans together. In fact, we accidentally got to know each other through this because we happen to major in Accounting as well. We bought stuff from each other and that’s how we became friends.
However, it’s quite costly and hard to find people to collaborate for these kinds of events (celebrating idol’s birthday etc.). You’re spending your own money and not everyone wants to do that. Plus, collaborating and timing meet-ups does add some tension occasionally.
During my first year as a KPOP fan, I spent a lot of money for KPOP. Then, during my second year, I started rationalising whenever I’m buying something for KPOP. I will buy what I want. From there, I can use the remaining money elsewhere.
We largely adopt this culture of fan meet-ups from Korean fans. If you see what’s happening in Korea, it’s more intense than here. For example, for a large number of the fanbase like EXO fans, they can collect more funds and voluntarily give this money to the organizers. The organizers will then give out gifts like cards and stickers with their idol’s faces on it.
But the thing is you don’t simply connect with others exclusively through KPOP alone. It can be about other things in life. It’s fine if you want to join Twitter groups where most fan accounts will interact with each other. KPOP fans are usually active in Twitter but there are some in Facebook as well.
Personally, I don’t think there’s any problem with KPOP. Ultimately, the songs are just songs. It’s the language and beats and rhythms. Don’t get too obsessed with it. Learn to prioritize your life because KPOP idols’ lives are already sorted out.”
