“Imagine we have to wake up every 6 am and assemble in the field to kawad (march). It was tough but we got used to it quickly.
We actually met and became friends for 5 years since we joined PLKN (National Service Training Program). We were forced to join this, actually. But after the first tough week, we were able to adapt to the program.
What made the program tough was the punctuality aspect. Every morning, we start off with Physical Training and then we’ll have our breakfast. So, our schedule would go on until 8 am when we have to attend to our class. In the afternoon, we had our lunch and at 2pm, we will start marching. Usually, we don’t get the chance to shower in the morning because of our schedule.
Of course, none of us enjoyed doing this but as we followed the schedule and instructions accordingly, we had nothing to stress about. But if you ask us whether we miss our PLKN friends, of course, we do. In fact, we still have our Whatsapp group— Alpha, Beta, Bravo and Charlie.
But sadly, PLKN was discontinued because they were running out of budget. We think we were the last batch of 2014. What we know now is our junior told us that PLKN won’t randomly pick the students anymore.
Nevertheless, we think this program was beneficial to students. It’s good that if you’re selected for the program, you should go and try. It’s an experience and it happens only once in your life. We also appreciate that regardless of whether you’re Chinese, Malay or Indian, in the end, we would all become friends. PLKN really change you to be an open-minded person.”
