“I was 26 when I started to sing opera, which happened by accident. I’ve always wanted to sing and do music but felt discouraged at first by the people around me. Until one point, I’ve finally come to the realisation that my life would be filled with regrets if I continue to do nothing.
So, I started small by doing open mic shows around KL. A good friend of mine then asked me to take singing lessons from her friend.
It turns out that he teaches classical singing, including opera. I’m glad to have him as my teacher because I was able to grasp the basis of all types of singing.
Every part of the body is used to produce sound and you need to have good techniques to fill the room with your voice.
My inspiration is Lady Gaga, who was also classically trained.
In Madama Butterfly, I’m one of the village ladies who accompanies the main character, CioCio san to meet her suitor.
But just a month before the show, I fell down and injured my leg. So, I had to use a crutch on stage, which I wrapped with wood design wallpaper to make it appear more appropriate for the setting.
I even hobbled on stage to look like the village cripple. The audience thought it was good acting but they didn’t know the injury was real!”
