In preparation for World Heart Day on 29 September, Institut Jantung Negara (IJN) hosted a public health forum titled “30s and Thriving: Prioritize Heart Health Early.” The event aimed to raise awareness about the rising risks of high cholesterol and cardiovascular issues in individuals aged 30 to 40.
The forum featured a panel of IJN experts, including cardiologists, physiotherapists, and dietitians, alongside influencer and chef Ili Sulaiman. Moderated by Dr. Rowina Lynne, a Clinical Cardiologist at IJN, the session was part of IJN’s World Heart Day 2024 campaign themed “Neon Sparks, Healthy Heart Embarks.”
Prof. Dato’ Sri Dr. Mohamed Ezani Md Taib, CEO of IJN, highlighted the institute’s commitment to improving heart health, stating, “We strive to bridge the gap between the public and healthcare, encouraging young adults to prioritize their heart health and seek regular screenings.”
The forum addressed crucial topics, including understanding cholesterol levels, recognizing heart disease risk factors, and taking proactive measures for prevention. Attendees learned about the significance of early intervention in enhancing health outcomes.
Datuk Dr. Ahmad Khairuddin, Senior Consultant Cardiologist, noted the alarming trend of high cholesterol among young Malaysians. “According to the National Health & Morbidity Survey 2023, 7.6 million adults in Malaysia suffer from high cholesterol, with rising cases in the 25-29 age group,” he stated.
Influencer Ili Sulaiman shared her personal journey after experiencing a heart attack at age 38. “I overlooked warning signs, including regular inflammation and high stress. My health is now my top priority, and I urge those in their 30s to get checked for high cholesterol,” she encouraged.
Other speakers included physiotherapist Sarjit Singh Jahal, who emphasized the role of physical activity in managing cholesterol, and Foong Pui Hing, Senior Principal Dietitian, who recommended heart-friendly foods like oily fish, beans, and vegetables.
As part of its World Heart Day activities, IJN is partnering with AstraZeneca to host a week-long campaign at AEON Shah Alam from 24 to 29 September 2024, featuring interactive activities, informational booths, and exclusive heart screening packages.
